Are Your Toothbrush and Toothpaste Supporting Your Oral Health?

Posted .

Today our Willis J Jensen DDS team in Arlington Heights, Illinois, are happy to share some tips with you regarding your daily brushing routine. With the help of the right products for the job, cleaning your teeth and gums will be a breeze while giving you the results you are looking for–a healthier, more appealing smile.

We begin by giving a nod to products with the American Dental Association Seal on them which lets you know that it is proven to be both safe and effective at what it claims to do. Your goal is to brush at least twice a day, for two minutes each time and follow up with flossing at least once.

Let’s evaluate your toothbrush. What kind do you use? Hard or soft bristles? Soft-bristled brushes are best for protecting tooth enamel and gum tissue while cleaning your teeth. Your gums are also happier with rounded bristles on the brush. A toothbrush that has a small head is ideal if you have a small mouth, so it can reach the back teeth.

If you can’t seem to make yourself spend two minutes on each brushing session, an electric or battery-powered toothbrush will give you the cleaning you need. After you brush, you need to leave it uncovered so it can air dry before the next use. No matter what kind of toothbrush you use, change it out every 3-4 months or when the bristles are worn.

Next, let’s look at your toothpaste. A fluoride toothpaste is a good all-around cavity-fighting choice. If you have red or bleeding gums when you brush, use an anti-gingival paste to protect your gums. If you have a problem with tartar (hardened plaque), then using a tartar-control paste will best serve you. If the color of your teeth is bothering you, one with whitening agents will lighten tooth stains and give you a whiter appearance. And if you find yourself flinching from tooth pain when you eat or drink hot or cold items, a desensitizing paste can block the pain.

We invite you to give us a call at 847-577-7440 if you have any questions or concerns about your smile. Be sure to support your daily oral care with six-month dental cleanings. Your dentist, Dr. Willis Jensen, is happy to help you maintain your confident smile!
